The Bulldog and Lady Bulldog soccer teams are headed to the state playoffs!
Both squads capped off great District 4-AAAA seasons last week, with the Lady 'Dogs defeating Goddard 2-0 to secure the 2024 district crown. After suffering their lone D4 loss to the Lady Rockets in the teams' first meeting Oct. 7, 1-0, the girls in orange battled Thursday at Goddard High in Roswell to get the job done and earn a bye through the first round of the Class 4A State Tournament. The fourth-seeded Lady Bulldogs (13-4-2) will await the winner of Tuesday's game between No. 12 Aztec and No. 5 St. Pius. The time and date for Artesia's weekend quarterfinal will be announced later this week. You can view the full 4A girls' state soccer bracket here.
The Lady Bulldogs celebrated their D4 title with a trip to Lubbock, Texas, for a Texas Tech University women's soccer game and had fun passing out candy to local kids at Saturday's Trick-or-Treat Main Street event before settling in for some great grub while watching Sunday's seeding and selection show.
The Bulldogs (14-6), meanwhile, finished as the runner-up of this year's district race after falling to Goddard on the road Thursday by a final of 3-0. The 'Dogs also had a great district run, twice coming up a goal short of Lovington and defeating the Rockets in their first meeting, 2-1 in overtime. Artesia's solid season earned them an eight seed and a home game in the first round of the Class 4A State Tournament. They'll square off with No. 9 Highland at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, at The Mack for the right to advance to the quarterfinals and a weekend meeting with top-ranked St. Pius. The Bulldog volleyball team got District 4-AAAA play off to a knock-down, drag-out start this past week, splitting a pair of five-game matches with Portales and Goddard.
The Artesia netters came up just short of Portales Tuesday at Bulldog Pit. The girls in orange picked up a 25-22 win in Game One before falling by identical scores of 18-25 in the second and third sets. The 'Dogs bounced back in a big way with a 25-12 win in Game Four but were unable to build an advantage in the deciding set, falling 7-15. Leading the team in kills on the night were Hattie Harrison with 17 and Kailee Padilla with 13. Harrison and Carmen Harvey both served up four aces; Padilla and Harvey posted 18 and 17 digs, respectively; and Kirklyn Miller finished with 34 assists.
The Bulldogs came out on the winning end of another battle to the wire on Thursday, however, besting Goddard in five at Ground Zero in Roswell. Artesia spent the meat of the match going back and forth with the Rockets, falling 19-25 in the first set, taking Game Two 25-20, coming up short 23-25 in Set Three, and once again tying the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth game. That brought about a thrilling deciding set, which Artesia took 15-13. Stat leaders included Padilla with 18 kills and Harrison with 12; Harvey with four aces and Padilla with three; Harrison with four solo blocks; Padilla with 14 digs and Brooklynne Ivans with 11; and Miller with 41 assists.
Artesia (10-9, 1-1) will now prepare for two more District 4 road matches this week, as they travel to Lovington for a 6:30 p.m. match against the Wildcats (0-18, 0-1) on Tuesday, Oct. 29, before heading to Portales Thursday, Oct. 31, for a Halloween rematch with the Ramettes (12-7, 3-0) at 6:30 p.m.
