The sixth-ranked Bulldog soccer team gave it their all Thursday in Lovington but came up just short of the No. 9 Wildcats for the second time in District 4-AAAA play, 2-1.

The 'Cats took a 2-0 lead in at the half, and while the 'Dogs were able to trim their deficit to one in the final 40 minutes, they were ultimately unable to come up with the tying goal. With the loss, Artesia dropped to 2-2 in D4 play, while Lovington locked things up at 4-0. Goddard also stands at 2-2 and Portales at 0-4.

The Bulldogs took a break from their district schedule Saturday for a game against Miyamura at The Mack, topping the Patriots 3-0.

Artesia (13-4) will continue Round Two of district action at 6 p.m. (JV: 4 p.m.) Tuesday, Oct. 15, against Portales at the Mack Chase Athletic Complex before hosting St. Pius in their final non-district bout of the season at 7 p.m. (JV: 5 p.m.) Saturday, Oct. 19, at The Mack. Tuesday's game against Portales will also be Senior Night!

LADY BULLDOG SOCCER

The fourth-ranked Lady Bulldog soccer team suffered their first District 4-AAAA loss this week to Goddard but improved to 3-1 this weekend with a road win over Lovington.

The Lady 'Dogs fell 1-0 Monday at The Mack to the No. 6 Lady Rockets, with Goddard scoring the game's lone goal in the first half and hanging on the remainder of the way for the win, holding Artesia to just three shots on goal in the contest. Senior keeper Kinsley Rodriguez had a solid game overall with seven saves.

On Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs got back on track with a 2-0 win over Lovington in Lovington, scoring a goal in each half. With that, the girls in orange moved to 3-1 in D4 play. Goddard is in the lead at 4-0, Lovington in third at 1-3, and Portales in fourth at 0-4.

Artesia (11-4-2) will close out its district schedule over the next two weeks, hosting Portales Thursday, Oct. 17, and travelling to Roswell for a rematch with Goddard Tuesday, Oct. 22.

BULLDOG VOLLEYBALL

The sixth-ranked Bulldog volleyball team went 1-1 this week against a pair of out-of-class opponents, defeating 3A Ruidoso, 3-1, before falling to 5A Hobbs, 3-2.

The Warriors came out strong against the 'Dogs Tuesday at Bulldog Pit, taking the first set 25-21. Artesia righted the ship from there, however, taking the next three games by scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-22. Junior Kailee Padilla led the squad in kills on the night with 17, while senior Hattie Harrison and junior Brooklynne Ivans delivered a trio of aces apiece. Harrison also had two solo blocks, while senior Carmen Harvey and Padilla posted 14 and 13 digs, respectively, and junior Kirklyn Miller finished with 38 assists.

The Bulldogs hosted Hobbs Thursday with hopes of avenging a Sept. 17 3-2 loss to the Eagles on the road. Artesia got off to a solid start, winning Games One and Three (25-16 and 25-12) to take a 2-1 lead over the Eagles, who claimed the second set, 25-19. Hobbs would win out from there, however, 25-22 and 15-9. Harrison finished with 19 kills and Padilla and junior Demrie Howard 10 apiece, while Miller served up a trio of aces and 47 assists. Harvey logged 19 digs on the match, Padilla 16, and Ivans 10.

With the split, Artesia moved to 8-8 on the season as they prepare to host their final regular-season match this week. They'll take on Alamogordo at 6:30 p.m. (JV: 5:30 p.m.) Thursday, Oct. 17, at Bulldog Pit.

The AHS cross country teams were off this week as they prepare for the Saturday, Oct. 19, Academy Extravaganza in Albuquerque, but the program hosted its fundraiser Nightmare in Artesia 5k Friday at Jaycee Park. The event was a big success, and the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs thanked everyone who volunteered and participated for their support!
